Résumé

Ray completed his law studies at the end of 1988 at the University of NSW and graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Laws majoring in economics and accounting. He was admitted as a barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and the High Court of Australia in February 1989 and has appeared in every jurisdiction and every level of courts, from the Magistrates Court to the full bench of the NSW Court of Appeal covering a wide range of areas of law. His practice has always been very broadly based in business law, commercial law and taxation and now family law. His practice has led him to be very familiar with all types of commercial structures including discretionary (family) trusts and testamentary trusts used in the preparation of wills.
Ray worked as Principal Policy Officer with the NSW Attorney General’s Department and with NSW Agriculture as part of the NSW State Government’s legislative review program under the National Competition Principles Agreement. Whilst working with NSW Agriculture he taught Commercial Law at the NSW College of TAFE.
For more than 15 years Ray worked exclusively in the insurance industry. He consulted to most of the major insurance companies including Lumley Life, Prefsure, Gerling Global, Citicorp Life, AMP Life, ING Life, CommInsure, Asteron, Zurich Life, The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd and AFA Insurance Pty Ltd, advising and training claims staff to manage complex and litigated claims. Recognising his work in the life insurance industry he was awarded an associate fellowship of the Australian Life Underwriting and Claims Association (ALUCA).
  • Courses Ray has completed are:
  • A course in mediation to the level approved by the Law Society of NSW qualifying him to conduct mediations.
  • Two courses, preliminary and advanced, named "Scientific Content Analysis" or SCAN (www.lsiscan.com). These courses concentrate on the content of what is said during interviewing and in handwritten statements. SCAN highlights instances where a claimant may have tried to deceive the interviewer. The courses were developed by a former member of the Israeli Mossad. Both of the courses were attended by senior members of the NSW Police and members of Australian national intelligence agencies, demonstrating the regard in which the courses are held by the intelligence community.
  • A course titled "the Negotiator's Toolkit". This course focuses on the actual techniques of interviewing, the body language of interviewees and techniques and strategies for drawing information from interviewees.
Ray was very fortunate during his career as a barrister to be Junior Counsel to a number of leading Queens Counsel. The techniques of obtaining information during the taking of evidence and cross-examination he learned from these very senior members of the legal profession has been of profound importance for the taking of evidence and cross-examining witnesses.
Having spent the first eight years of his legal career as a barrister in New South Wales, Ray has had extensive experience managing civil litigation and he is available to represent clients in most civil disputes. More recently he has managed litigation in the WA Supreme Court and the Federal Court.

Judi Lumley

Judi completed her studies and was awarded her law degree in 2019. She was admitted as a legal practitioner in December 2019 and commenced practice in January 2020. She now holds an unrestricted practising certificate. Judi has developed special skills in Family Law and is becoming sought after, particularly by our female clients for representation in the Family Court..
